Thanks for the comment, you saved my mental health :P
I was trying to setup the Atheros AR242x wireless controller on Ubuntu
8.04 installed on a HP g7060ev laptop bought in Greece. After trying out
different combinations of the set of steps that are supposed to solve the
driver problem, i tried out your approach and it worked perfectly! I'm
guessing that the fact that you didn't disable the "support for 802.11
wireless..." driver made all the difference.
