The problem that NetworkManager detects ath_pci as a wired card is that it
checks the info.capabilities field lshal can show you too. I hadn't
enabled WIRELESS_EXT_SYSFS in the kernel 2.6.27-rc5 configuration as the
help text states:
This option enables the deprecated wireless statistics
files in /sys/class/net/*/wireless/. The same information
is available via the ioctls as well.
Say Y if you have programs using it (we don't know of any)
So either NM uses the sysfs only or MadWifi doesn't provide this info via
the ioctls. As sysfs is deprecated better support the ioctls!
