Thanks Moritz, of course it makes sense to have your whole home directory hosted on NFS... However even in this case I would probably have git avoid NFS, for instance using a cron job syncing repos located on local hard drives. The (regular) performance boost should be worth the extra configuration hassle (only once). I think this is how most people tend to backup their git workspaces: using git itself since it is so efficient.
