Agreed in general.

But in this specific case, a basic rsync cron job that backs up
"/fast_and_local_home/john" to NFS-mounted
"/home/john/backup_of_local" is just one simple line. And it can be
forgotten about. It is a very cheap, simple and effective
optimization. Much cheaper than making every single git tool on earth
cater for the slower performance of a network file system.

I agree with Dave that it is not so much off topic. It is not specific
to NFS but more generally about supporting git repos on slower, network
file systems.
