when I looked again, I find that I was still opening my inbox folder at startup. 
I've looked closer but I can't find how to disable opening folders at startup. 
I also can't find where the IMAP parameters have been set.

well, like you surmised, it made absolutely no difference (turning of
colorization).  I wish there was some way I could take a look inside and find
out where it's spinning its wheels.

I get roughly the same duration delay (and 100 percent CPU utilization) when I:

Change viewer
start mahogany
change sort order or sort key (i.e. from subject to date to status flag)
