This is because for some reason the old message wasn't unselected -- and Mahogany doesn't show the last selected message if there is more than one message selected (maybe it should switch to "Multiple messages selected" screen instead of keeping the first selection?). I don't know why Ctrl-End + Space doesn't unselect the previously selected message but it doesn't seem like a big deal to me.
