Now that you've explained what's going on, I can see this is actually consistent with other selection behavior. E.g., select a msg, use ctrl-<up> to move to another msg, press <space>. Both msgs are selected. I find this a bit counterintuitive, perhaps because of my customary gui? I wd like a clear distinction between selection and multiple selection. E.g., ctrl-<space> for multiple selection and <space> for single selection. This can be a big deal. If you do not realize you have multiple msgs selected (as I did not, since the first msg was no longer visible in the folder view once I moved), you can e.g. delete multiple msgs when intending to delete only one. If something like the distinction I described above is not implemented, I think there needs to be a warning if multiple msgs will be deleted.
