I installed the wx2.7 .debs from ubuntu. Final output from
../configure is:
Configured Mahogany 0.67.0 for i686-pc-linux-gnu.
wxWindows port used: gtk2u 2.7.0
Debug mode: no
SSL support: yes
Modules support: dynamic
Embedded Python: 2.4
with swig: /usr/bin/swig
DSPAM spam filtering: no
It still fails with exactly the same error as before (which you quoted
above).
The config.log output from ../configure is at

the output of "make &>buildfail.txt" is at

All were run in a completely empty build-dir so they are very complete.
