Hi  Joel,

I started  Programming Linux only after the February 2010 ILUG meeting. I
purchased Debian Linux DVD from JJ's cafe and installed it on my Laptop. I had
more than seventeen years of Programming Experience in C++ (under Windows ) and
to learn more about Linux Programming , i started talking to people about Linux
as serious Development Platform. ( I found most people are in the philosophical
tar pit . They see world as Black/White.. where as a true easterner , i believe
there is shades of gray in between )

With Ease , i could transport my Windows C++ skill to Linux and learned
Objective C/C++/GNUStep to tranisition myself as a MAC developer. I see Linux
as a excellent platform for Software Development.

When I talk to people about Linux , i do not see much interest in programming.
For a guy who is interested in Cross Platform development , WineLib is an
interesting tool.  So, there is no question of sitting in two boats as i do not
have affinity towards anything. It is pure interest in Programming.

For guy who has just started fiddling with FOSS , i do not have credentials to
match that of yours.

The only published code ( MIT License ) of mine is
http://slangfordotnet.codeplex.com

The main point...
---------------------
In the past two developer meeting , i have empowered at least twenty youngsters
by explaining to them about GCC and Linux GUI development using C++ . One of
them blogged about it  @
http://sinujohn.wordpress.com/2010/06/06/a-quick-introduction-to-gcc/  . In the
short span of four months , i could help at least ten people ( i am not
counting ILUG people in it ) transition to Linux Programming .

Having said that , You are not a match for me as far as programming ability is
concerend.

Regards
Praseed Pai

Any one who ignores Windows ( it is a necessary evil ) will be an
impoverished programmer and can harm the aspirations of people who
depend upon them. (our kids, siblings and parents might not share the
same zeal regarding the Free Software movement )

haa, so u want to step on 2 boats at the same time... ;P.

How can we not ignore the institutionalized monopoly who does everything
possible(yeah there are some impossible elements in the universe that doesn't
require a window's license yet..for eg:  courage, wisdom and talent !!)  to
safeguards its own interest above the user community? There is no neutral
stance here... Either you are in collaboration with the monopoly... or you not.
Simple isnt it..as black and white.

No one has become impoverished programmer just because he hasn't bought any
stuff that gates sells..infact, you could save urself the trouble of continous
reboots and those stupid BSODs, by switching to a fully baked release like
Debian, instead of a market driven semi-cooked windows.

I come for User group meeting ( developer stream ) and has educated people
about writing software for Linux

so which is the famous GNU project that u have worked for?.. or let me put it
this way.. have you written any code that got downloaded more than 400 times??
i can show u a lot of mine...

If the current trend of Microsoft continues, of that of introducing purposefull
bugs and mis-features into its products, so as to harrass the consumers into
buying a new release every year..well.. soon the tables will be reversed..!!
not a matter of hope.. just a matter of time!!.

I have a doubt which is in a way (un)related to the topic.

I am not sure, but is there a  clause in GPL variants or AGPL that

says the license will not be applicable for a certain class of

software  say, software to control nuclear reactors & a GPLed OS

kernel should not be used on a weapon of mass destruction etc  ?
