GNU/Linux is part of the mainstream. As far as practical aspects are concerned, it is very important to replace/remove the binary blobs in FOSS kernels (firmware blobs in BSD kernels). Open h/w is another important thing.
Debian with ~Libre kernel works fine on most desktops (of course, most of the binary blobs are irrelevant for desktop users).
