Constant tuning? The last time I made a significant change to my greylister was in 2013 when I added addres fuzzing. Since then it's been on autopilot and works fine. Despite what some ESPs might assert, retry on 4xx has always been part of SMTP and real MTAs retry. I do agree that if you imagine that it's a FUSSP, or that doing it more aggressively will stop more spam, you'll be sorry. But as a simple hack to catch bots that don't retry, it works pretty well. It probably helps that I don't try very hard to be helpful to senders. My greylist response just says 451 4.4.5 Try again later.
