Thanks for the suggestion and I seriously thought that this would solve the
issue since I seem to be the only one with it, but alas, even this didn't
solve it.  I had to reconfigure my account login settings etc.  I started
from scratch and still, the compact view remains.  In Safari, the cosy view
is enabled as it should be.

This is mighty strange.
