A variation of the Nile crocodile as an attribute of Egypt or Africa is
the alligator or the cayman as an attribute of America. See :

The original of this statue of America, located at Versailles, was made
in 1675-1679. The crocodile-looking "alligator" is said to symbolize the
new colony of Louisiana. There's one problem : the French didn't explore
the delta and Louisiana wasn't founded until 1682...
