The Nile crocodile as an attribute of Africa can be seen on Frederic de Wit’s first folio map of Africa published in 1660. NOVA | AFRICA | DESCRIPTIO | Auct. F. de Wit.
The crocodile as a general attribute of Africa, not combining with the seated nude, dates back much further, to at least the 13th century Ebstorf world map (p. 30, _Animals and Maps_, by Wilma George. Given the importance of the crocodile in African iconography, this is not a big surprise: http://www.metmuseum.org/Collections/search-the-collections/100000305.
