As a map dealer myself, I don't think much expertise was shown by the man who
said real old maps are the rarest. Not necessarily the most expensive.
Excellent advice from long ago - if you want a really old map and have little
money, go for an unpopular island.
Maps are very much like books - supply and demand drive the prices.
Also, remember, like very old books, they were very, very expensive at the time
so sold to the rich, who took care of them.
An idea of comparative values - George Vancouver's charts of the late
18th Century were copper engravings. The cost of each copper plate, elephant
folio, at that period was £1,200. By comparison, the pay for the AB seaman on
Capt. Cook's Third Voyage, finally paid in 1784, for the entire voyage, three
years, was £36.00. (The Vancouver plates were stolen, thus making the first
English edition very expensive.)
