Hi Tim,

We did quite a few animations last year showing time data. There is one example up on
our web site at www.mitchellgeo.com in the map gallery under Life Flight (below the
velveeta map). It shows about 24 scenes in an animated GIF each representing one
month and showing accumulating data. The set uses several variables via thematic maps
to show the progression. The only trick was keeping a handle on the data and map
displays since each frame is a seperate map and they need to be consistent and build
on each other. I saved them out of MapInfo as JPG image files and patched them
together in Corel Photopaint which gives the ability to build and manage (a little
bit) animated GIF files. There are many GIF creation programs that can do the same...

This is fairly simplistic in result but gets the point accross. We did some other
animation comparing helicopter flights to ambulance routes on the ground using actual
time data...i.e. the helicopter flies its track as a little icon and the ambulance
drives the road at the same time. It was a dramatic depiction of time savings for
trauma patients based on actual cases. We tried this in MapInfo for a while but
eventually got help from an animation pro who used some high end animation software -
can't recall the name of it (he does rave visuals and TV ads mainly). There are some
things you can do in MapInfo with the animation layer - reference the geographic
tracker and similar showing your GPS position on a base map 'live'.

Making a map for each frame and constructing animated GIFs is probably your best bet.
Happy to help walk you through this - just reply privately or call.
