Doug's idea is a good one.  I saved layout windows on a yearly time series and brought 
them into powerpoint.  I worked great.    However, you will need some summary measure. 
 Thematic's work, but I would suggest you check into the hotspot routines in CrimeStat 
that is available free from the Crime Mapping Research Center.     The program reads 
DBF and dat files and output mif files.  The new version out in a couple of months 
will have more hotspot routines.  The web site is

I've done a series by taking creating TIFF files of monthly thematic maps,
paste each into PowerPoint and then you setup the animation. It works quite
well and displays variations with time and space.
