I just got a copy of Surfer 8, and this afternoon have been climbing
Learning Curve Mountain. At first I thought you were right, but now
I'm not as convinced. By turning off labels I get smooth, continuous
contours; no breaks. When I tried exporting filled polygons, there
was a small hitch in line styles (some were set to the invisible
style) but a quick "Select All" and a line style change fixed it
perfectly.

The MIF file export is a bit more ignorant than it should be. Surfer
doesn't seem to understand map projections, treating all coordinates
as cartesian, so MIF exports come across as "Non-earth." Of course,
that's easily fixed by tweaking the COORDSYS line in the MIF file,
but that bit could be a bit smarter. And maybe I don't know it yet
well enough.

However, so far I'm pretty impressed. Surfer seems to be quite a bit
more solid in what it can do than Vertical Mapper -- especially for
science freaks like me. Plus... it can be automated with its
built-in GS Scripter (VBScript) or any ActiveX Automation
environment! This bit has some really interesting possibilities for
developers, and ultimately for end users.

I bet for a thousand clams we could fix that. But before I take that
bet, what did SurfLink do that made it so valuable to you?

I'm intrigued enough with Surfer 8 so far that I'm like to hear from
more people who use it. Tell me what's particularly cool and what
stinks. Your feedback will help me over the next few pitches up
Learning Curve Mountain, and of course, I'll summarize.
