Hey Bill, thought you might want to take a look at MapCalc Learner or Pro
too?

MapCalc is a spatial analysis extension for all MapInfo Pro 6.0+ or Surfer
7.0 users; it reads and writes MapInfo TABs and MIFs, Golden's Surfer
formats as well as ESRI SHP. Sorry to bang this DRUM but you know I am a
spatial analysis freak!

MapCalc has excellent cross integration with BOTH MapInfo Pro 6.+ as well as
Surfer 7.0+. For the MapInfo users it can: read your TAB files; do surface
modeling (if you do not have Surfer); visualize many surfaces via 3D and 2D
with overlays; rasterizing TIFF images; script spatial statistics like
slope, aspect, regression, correlation, and others; and do extensive
distance and neighborhood relationships for viewsheds, drains, streams, and
heaps more. The put map-mathics to them for advanced insight and
abstractions

On top of all this neat stuff for raster-based spatial analysis, you can
also send contours, grid thematics, spatial statistics and the like directly
to Pro with one click! MapCalc adds most of the functionality of ESRI's
Spatial Analyst to MapInfo Pro.

And IMHO, Surfer is the superior surface generation system for GISers,
period. It has the most models needed for all types of data surface analysis
not just geographic. Its very quick and the Golden outfit has a great users'
attitude (As well as being just down the road from you!). Move the Surfer
grid values into MapCalc, do terrain or many other spatial studies, hit a
button or two and send simple to abstract grid data over to MapInfo for
addition of vectors, cartographic layout and web sharing. You'll have for
under a $1000 what ESRI or Intergraph users spend many $1000s for.

Anyone interested in CONTOURs or distance/neighborhood analysis/spatial
statistics via the SURFER-MapCalc-MapInfo connection is welcome to a 14-day
trial ware of MapCalc Learner at:

http://www.redhensystems.com/mapcalc

A bit confused or a novice on how to do grid-space spatial analysis? Making
neat 3Ds with Surfer or MapInfo Pro 6+ is just a tip of the "berg". You can
get heaps of explanation, illustration, and numerous examples via:

http://www.innovativegis.com/basis/Senarios/Default.html

And for anyone at the upcoming MapInfo Conference in San Diego, contact
Andrew Degeman from Red Hen and I am certain he can HAND you a MapCalc
Trialware CDROM as well.

Nick,

My impression is that Marconi is still offering Vertical Mapper
for sale, but they are not doing anything new with it and support
for it is not so great these days. Unless things change at
Marconi, I'd say Vertical Mapper is at a dead end.

For a replacement, you might take a look at Golden Software's
"Surfer" (http://www.goldensoftware.com). It's always been a
solid program and now it supports imports and exports of MIF
data. Maybe if enough MapInfo-Lers get interested Golden software
might consider compiling in the MITAB libraries and thus provide
direct support for MapInfo. I've used Surfer in the past and
found it to work pretty well; the only real problem I had with it
was that it didn't work well with MapInfo, but that may not be
the case any more. I'll have to try the demo and see.

Anyway, Surfer has more features than Vertical Mapper, and it's
less expensive. It also supports automation via VBA or with its
own GS Scripter, so I imagine it wouldn't be too difficult make a
relatively seamless connection to MapInfo, especially when
MapInfo starts supporting the .NET gospel next year. There's a
free downloadable demo on GS's web page (or $10 for the CD) that
has all features except print, save, copy and cut.

If anyone here is currently using Surfer 8, what's your
real-world take on it as regards using it with MapInfo?
