(With fear of sounding like an advertorial or chest beating/motherhood exercise) The success of MI over ESRI in Australia has been due to a couple of factors.
Firstly MapInfo has been blessed with strong strategic / business partners in Australia and New Zealand. With companies such as ERSIS (as mentioned by Robert Crossley), Insight GIS, Critchlows, Digital Mapping Solutions, Examin, Encom, Dryden and others, plus individuals such as Rob Crossley - the product was able to grow through the strong technical and sales skills with in. All of the above (and others) have pushed MapInfo to its technical limit. There are many examples of (COTS and customised) solutions which prove MapInfo can match it with anybody (inc ESRI). Succinctly and successfully we adopted the "we can beat them" approach. In addition during the 90's - ESRI's arrogance to the market and its competition provided us with the window. Backed up with effective and efficient services enabled us to sell, provide and justify GIS solutions that met the needs of users and organisations who needed a spatial based solution (but did not necessarily have the background). Simply we succeeded in providing "power to the people" (thx for the quote Rob C). The future looks quite bright for MapInfo here - as Rob C said MapInfo Australia now have a lot of ex ERSIS staff in management positions (eg Wal Mayr ex ERSIS MD is now head of MI Aust's technical development unit). In addition MapInfo Corp is becoming more and more aware of what's happening (Cantini's was very impressed during his recent visit). As long as MapInfo continues to provide robust products and the MapInfo partners continue to provide their high level of service then things look healthy. You never know MapInfo might hold the MapWorld Conference "down under" ? Interesting thread Bill... I hope some of the listers will offer a review or two on the Aussie MapShop program, both in terms of how they are using it and in terms of its features and shortcomings (if there are any). Speaking of the Aussies, it would appear they are the only Country that principally ascribes to, or 'gets it' when it comes to the benefits of MapInfo over ESRI. How is it their sales people have been (seemingly)so much more successful than those here in North America?
