David,
I have no experience of Arcview but have recently started using Arcpad 6.0.3
with an iPAQ in the field. I use MapInfo 5.5 on my main computer.
Using Universal Translator I have had no problems converting MapInfo files
directly into shp files and using these files in ArcPad. I have also had no
problems converting ArcPad shp files, created in the field, into MapInfo
files.

I hope this helps,
John Elliot
