Unfortunately, SHP seems the universal exchange format. I would prefer it to be MIF/MID.
However - as always - the consumer of the .SHP files will require a suitable knowledge of the projection and datum that you are using in MI, or (better - but also error-prone - various reasons for this) a .PRJ file that the ArcXXX user can read. UT has a database of transforms (MI to ESRI, etc) which you can locate on your system - but it is a bit arcane. I've often considered writing a useful and reliable transform utility. I'm assuming you're using an old MI version like I am (v6.5). (I have few / no problems using Manifold, and it will create a projection/datum XML file to accompany each SHP).
