I am quite familiar with most of the GIS packages. Maptitude is a good
deal. Caliper Corp is friendly, so is Maptitude. I teach courses in
public health uses of GIS using other packages. Maptitude classes are
making serious maps before lunch on Monday. Other packages allow
students to get their own results with some ease about Wednesday. The
manual that comes with Maptitude is very easy to use and if you do the
"One Minute Exercises" from start to finish you will definitely have a
secure grasp of how to proceed with your own data. And of course there
is this listserve to help you if you get stuck.

Obviously on a Maptitude listserve, folks are going to recommend
Maptitude. What's key is folks who are using or have used other GIS
software, and still recommend Maptitude. I would count myself as one of
those people, and I'm sure you will hear from several others who
experience in various software packages.

Maptitude has a great combination of ease of yse, price, and data that
comes with the software. The manual is designed to speed up the
learning curve. Back to price, not sure exactly what type of analysis
you intend to do, but more than likely Maptitude will handle anything
that the much costiler ESRI stuff can do.

The fact that you are new to this work and appearantly want to teach
yourself, makes Maptitude an excellent choice for mapping.

I am a program evaluator who is new to mapping and GIS work. I
would
appreciate the thoughts of those who are more familiar with the

who is
new to this work. In other words, is it fairly "user friendly"
for
someone just starting out? I am mainly looking for a program
that will
allow me to work with locally-constructed databases available as
Excel
        or Access files.

        Thank you.
