I second that. In addition, something to note about Maptitude is its
stability. If you make a wrong move in ArcGIS 9.1 it usually crashes. Now
who would want that?

I've had the good fortune, or misfortune to use quite a few GIS
packages over the past few years and can assure you that Maptitude is
streets ahead when it comes to ease of use. The trick with any GIS is
understanding the terminology and Maptitude communicates it's functionality
through a common-sense menu structure. The result is a new user is up and
running with an extensie range of capabilities within a very short time.

Obviously on a Maptitude listserve, folks are going to recommend
Maptitude. What's key is folks who are using or have used other GIS
software, and still recommend Maptitude. I would count myself as one of
those people, and I'm sure you will hear from several others who experience
in various software packages.

Maptitude has a great combination of ease of yse, price, and data that
comes with the software. The manual is designed to speed up the learning
curve. Back to price, not sure exactly what type of analysis you intend to
do, but more than likely Maptitude will handle anything that the much
costiler ESRI stuff can do.

The fact that you are new to this work and appearantly want to teach
yourself, makes Maptitude an excellent choice for mapping.

I am a program evaluator who is new to mapping and GIS work. I would
appreciate the thoughts of those who are more familiar with the
Maptitude software. Would you suggest Maptitude 4.8 for someone who is
new to this work. In other words, is it fairly "user friendly" for
someone just starting out? I am mainly looking for a program that will
allow me to work with locally-constructed databases available as Excel
or Access files.

Thank you.
