Unfortunately, the only way to defeat Trumpism is by adopting a program similar to Bernie Sanders's. We've seen how hostile the DP establishment is to that. When FDR was elected in 1932, he was more or less a Biden type figure, which ironically corresponds to Sanders analogy of Biden being potentially the most progressive president since FDR. However, in 1932 there was a USSR whose economic system offered benefits that could seduce unemployed and non-unionized workers. The CIO organizing drive made leftist parties attractive to the average American worker. And so on.

Those conditions do not exist today. The union movement is on the ropes and the bureaucrats are more compromised than ever. Rich Trumka is no John L. Lewis by any stretch of the imagination. With manufacturing hollowed out and the economy more and more being based on finance and commerce (Amazon, UPS, Fed Express), the social base for a class struggle momentum that would put enough pressure on the DP for a social democratic outlook is guarded at best.

On top of that, the capitalist system in the USA is riven by contradictions. Keep in mind that it was WWII that finally broke the back of the Great Depression. I see no Kondratiev wave that can restore new investment into manufacturing. Basically, we are in a period where the only solution is a revolution that can create the conditions for a world based on peace, sustainability, and human development. I have trouble enough convincing self-avowed Marxists like Bhaskar Sunkara to see things that way, so I doubt there is much hope of convincing someone driving a truck for UPS.

Maybe in the 22nd century...
