Before Louis and I arrived in Houston, the KKK was in the habit of ending their monthly meetings north of the city by machine gunning the home of Fred and Laura Brode. The sandbags were still there. They bombed our bookstore. It was still selling books and pamphlets that were damage by the shrapnel. But, yet, as Louis points out, they were pushed back and what had been a public presence for the KKK faded in a relatively short period, considering how it had been a force in the city for decades.
As to the religious right, it's pretty much just the right that uses religious rhetoric. Talk to these people. I think that nine out of ten of them wouldn't know a religious argument if it bit them. Religious talk, though, helps to sanctify the anti-social cruelty that has been increasingly celebrated in sections of the American population since the 1980s, if not before. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
