Yes, think Andrew is right about the origins of the KKK --- they were aimed
at overthrowing the Reconstruction governments --- and as I've mentioned
before, the end of Reconstruction led to a period (roughly from 1877 to
1897) where the Democrats dominated the South and beginning in the 1880s, a
resistance emerged within the Southern Farmers' Alliance which by 1890 had
morphed into the Populist party --- which until 1896 posed a real threat to
the racist regimes of the South because of the attempt to unify black and
white farmers, tenants, etc. ---- (last gasp of this coalition, Wilmington,
NC in 1898) --- After the election of 1896, the (white) Populists gave up
on working with blacks and opted for disenfranchisement and Jim Crow --- so
it's incorrect to see the KKK as the instrument that created Jim Crow ---
the Klan was actually less of a factor after 1877 than it was beginning in
the 1860s --- (again -- apologies for nit-picking). JIM CROW was the
result of the Populist defeats in 1896 ....

I think (by contrast) the 1960s version of the Klan WAS (is?) a
militarized arm of the white Southern resistance to what has been called
rightly the "Second Reconstruction" courtesy of the Civil Rights Act of
1964 and more importantly the Voting Rights Act of 1965. --- it (and the
racist voter suppresionists) NEVER GAVE UP --- and they have come back with
a vengeance with the big push from the Supreme Court ----

The question for today is whether the KKK, Proud Boys, Bougaloo Boys, etc.
can be the shock troops for a "fascist style" (and I don't mind using the
term Bonapartist which may technically be a more appropriate analogy)
transformation of the American polity or will the Biden ADministration (and
the law enforcement establishment have enough strength, interest and
support to suppress these folks and defeat that political movement
