Michael, I think in the short term, the Biden Administration will rein them in. They will make public examples of many of those arrested to become a cautionary tale that the liberal - and imho more dangerous - wing of the ruling class hope the rest of us will heed to not repeat. For that "fascist-style" transformation to happen, any opposition coming from below (workers, students, LGBTQIA community, Blacks, etc) would have suffered defeat, and elements of it brought into the fascist fold.
I do wonder which new emperor will rise in Trump's wake. Will it be Josh Hawley, Tom Cotton, or someone else we've never heard from the ranks of the shock troops in waiting. In the book American Messiahs, there's a piece titled, "Sweet Fascism In The Piney Woods." The book is from 1935 and the author states that the South had been governed by fascist methods since 1876. It makes all the parallels between Fascist Italy & Nazi Germany and the South of that time and refers to then, Georgia governor Eugene Talmadge as the Georgia Fuehrer. After reading the piece, I came to the conclusion that fascism is as American as apple pie. It leads me to ask if American capitalism can birth these types of movements without a crisis in the regional, national, or global economic system or independent of the boom & bust cycle?
