I am responding to Louis’ message of yesterday.

First, I want to change something I said. Louis objected to the phrase “a
correct understanding.” I should have said “a better understanding.” “Correct
understanding" smacks of “the correct line’ which itself suggests and all-wise
and all-knowing leadership. Even so, I do sometimes argue forcefully for what
I believe to be a correct understanding of one or another question and I think
it would be fair to say that Louis does this as well.

I think Louis and I are in agreement on the question of building a leadership.
In his article from fifteen years go he said, "To prepare for these momentous
events, it is necessary to build a Marxist movement that is made up of the most
critical-minded workers, farmers and intellectuals.”

I will accept his statement "In the class struggle, the relationship of class
forces is the determining factor going back to the Paris Commune,” if we
include subjective factors in that relationship of forces. Factors such as
consciousness, self-confidence, and the capacity to come together in struggle.
And I believe that building a leadership is essential to achieving unity in
struggle.
