If the major Canadian banks and leading corporations were magically transformed into state-owned enterprises rather than held in private hands, I would welcome the change as a giant step forward. I would do so in the expectation that public rather than private ownership of the economy would greatly accelerate economic growth and dramatically raise living standards. I have to admit I would welcome the change even if the Communist Party of Canada were to solely administer the new system in place of the present alternating duopoly of Liberal and Conservative governing parties, and were it to allow a large private sector to continue to exist below the commanding heights and under its control. I would see the political culture of “socialism” as a more favourable environment to persuade the masses of the need for genuine workers’ democracy and workers' control of the means of production, and for an end to the glaring disparities in income and other benefits between the masses and the privileged political leadership and bureaucracy in the public sphere and the billionaires in the private one. I would support any working class movement advancing this program were one to appear, either above and/or below ground. However, I appreciate that Charlie and others will dismiss any resemblance to today’s China and might in any case oppose such change as described above because of the accompanying deformations.
