Suggest for starters, Charlie, you read Isabella Weber's "How China Avoided Shock Therapy", a detailed account of how and why China in the 70’s did not restore capitalism and dismantle state control as Russia did in the early '90s. Michael Roberts praised the book which won the 2021 Joan Robinson Prize. I agree with Roberts that Weber, a non-Marxist, "appears ambiguous on the economic foundation of the Chinese state”. For her, he says, "China ‘ grew into global capitalism’ but still ' maintained its control over the commanding heights’," and she refers elsewhere to China’s ascent which did not lead to a “wholesale assimilation to capitalism”. All of which reinforces how the unique development of the Chinese economy has posed new challenges of analysis and definition for Marxists and non-Marxists alike, myself included. Too bad you find it so difficult to sustain enough self-discipline to explore contentious issues in a calm and comradely way. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
