My Deutscher memory is from STALINI A POLITICAL BIOGRAPHY not from the TROTSKY trilogy -- and there I am almost certain (with memory lapses always possible) that Duetscher came down on the side that Tukhachevski had indeed tried to get rid of Stalin DURING the purge trials (again, I do not remember the date of Tukhachevski's secret trial and execution) --- that in other words he was "guilty" in effect unlike many of the true believers who confessed in order not to embarrass the party (on this see THE CONFESSION by Costa Garvas about Artur London in Czechoslovakia).
