Not only in the US. Their own sudden extinction seems too remote and horrific for people to contemplate, so they generally don’t. Even those who ought to be organizing a new antiwar movement seem to have been lulled into complacency after living for decades with a threat which has never materialized despite multiple crises and near-misses. Reminds me of that grim old joke about someone falling off a skyscraper and consoling themself with “so far, so good” as they descended past each floor.
