I guess one argue that "THE" original "Cold War" was a competition between two DIFFERENT SYSTEMS --- and that had significant influences on both the internal behavior of the US (I argue that was why the NEW DEAL regulated capitalism expanded to create what some radical economists describe as a specific Social Structure of Accumulation --- one that approximated European Social Democracy) and the USSR (which was focused on rapid economic and military growth which one could argue debased and destroyed any uniqueness to the "workers' state" that was craeted in the 1920s and 30s in the USSR.
Since China and the US are both expansionist capitalist countries --- the existence of the "other" does not force a modification of the internal structure of the two socieities ---- One could argue that --- unclear if that is a correct analysis --- (Just saying!!)
