Worth noting also is that most demonstrations aren't marches on national
capitals planned by leaders of national organizations drawing in participants
from across the country.  They are demonstrations within cities where "unity
from below" between Marxists and rank-and-file liberals in the Democratic and
social democratic and Labour parties develops quite spontanously and
organically.

What Artesian calls the struggle over" the form and content of the unity"
rarely if ever comes up.   I don't recall any debates, for example, between
those wanting to " articulate the actual class struggle of labor against
capital" against those wanting to march for "free speech" or "freedom  of
assembly" or "individual rights".  Organizers don't and can't police slogans.
There are always a diversity of signs and chants, some of which are invariably
sectarian and calculated more to satisfy the revolutionary self-image of the
demonstrators than to win  sympathetic bystanders to the cause.  Most recently,
we've encountered this divide on the pro-Palestinian marches. There is, in
other words, room for both those who want to articulate class struggle and
those who want to focus on building public pressure on governments to adopt
democratic demands or to withdraw their support for imperialist wars.
