Charlie in effect asks what I would advocate regarding automation on the
docks. Back after WW II, there was a call of 30 for 40 - thirty hours work
for 40 hours pay. The idea was if automation reduces the number of labor
hours necessary to produce an automobile, then the workers should benefit
from that automation. Nowadays, I suspect it should be something like 15
for 40. I'm not familiar enough with the longshore industry to say exactly
how it could be implemented, but something along those lines. Maybe a
guarantee that the same number of workers employed for unloading each ship,
or that not only the present workers' jobs be guaranteed, but that that be
guaranteed in perpetuity.
