What should ILA boss Daggett and crew do to show "solidarity with future
generations"? John replied, "15 hours work for 40 hours pay." For dockworkers
only? Who gets to be the dockworkers of the future? And if you are in touch
with workers, you know that many would work two such jobs; not only for the
money but because work is the center of your life. John's other idea: the same
number of port jobs that exist now be guaranteed forever. Too silly to bother
with.

John can denounce ILO boss Daggett (not difficult to do!), but his posturing
about future generations is empty. In general, he looks for broad radical
demands that 1) cannot be taken seriously for the contract fight now, and 2)
avoid declaring that we are for revolution to overthrow capitalism – not by
waving a banner, but by doing what each of us can to help and prepare. This
political style is common among a swath of Trotskyists.
