Now of course one might object that there can be "elements" of proxy
war in various cases, and sure, most conflicts are a combination of
different factors. So if we are just using "proxy war" to mean that
some imperialist or powerful capitalist state is backing one side for
its own interests, and in doing so attempts to "proxify" parts of the
leadership of a struggle, then that's fine, but that does not
necessarily change the nature of the conflict itself
...............
It is no "proxy" to want to defend itself from its former colonial
ruler, any more than Algeria would be someone's "proxy" if its former
French colonial master decided to re-invade the country.

If I got it right, and please correct me if I didn't, I can see here a
two-fold argument. First, you assert that it is at least predictable
that any imperialism would step in a given conflict for its own
interests "and, in doing so, attempts to "proxify" parts of the
leadership of a struggle". Although branding an authoritarian capitalist
government as the "leadership of the struggle" is misleading, this
cautious and conditional claim concludes that "that does not necessarily
change the nature of the conflict itself". In the abstract, I would
agree with this.
But, as a corollary, this entails that if the imperialist attempt
succeeds in proxifing the whole or the decisive part of the
"leadership," the nature of the conflict itself will also change.
Then, a few lines below in your email, your argument continues in
asserting that the very "desire" of a capitalist country to defend
itself from an imperialist aggressor makes it kind of immune to
proxification.
This argument raises two objections. First, although you rightfully
appeal to the working-class agency, there is no working-class agency in
your argument. The whole thing is to be decided on the "leadership" level.
Second, and most seriously, it seems implausible that a mere desire from
this or that part of a given conflict could ever decide its nature.
I would appreciate any of your comments.Solidarity
