BTW speaking of Philipp Frank and Lenin, the physicist Jeremy Bernstein, who had studied under Frank at Harvard, in his book Quantum Profiles (Oxford University Press, 2021), included in that book a profile of Frank. One anecdote that he recounted was Frank's encounter with the FBI. Frank was noted for his support for many leftist causes and for the fact that in the US he attempted to carry on Otto Neurath's project for creating a unified science. Naturally, during the McCarthy period, he would come under the scrutiny of the FBI. Eventually, they would invite themselves over to Frank's apartment to interview him. According to Bernstein, after Frank was interrogated for a short time, he would pull off his book shelf a copy of Lenin's Materialism and Empiriocriticsm, and he showed the FBI special agents the page, where Lenin had criticized him. That seemed to make an impression on the special agents, who saluted Frank and ended the interview. According to Bernstein, they would never darken Frank's door again.
