You advocate 'treating “objective reality” instrumentally and empirically.' If 
you will re-read Lenin's definition, you will see that it grounds empirical 
investigation. As for "instrumentally," the bare adjective more often summons 
pragmatism than materialism.

So when "Frank deliberately avoided grounding science in such philosophical 
categories," it suggests the positivist refusal to distill the specific 
knowledges of matter that we acquire into theories.
