Last week, I posted a message that the Trump regime, Donald Trump the person,
and MAGA were distinct from one another. MAGA is arguably a developing fascist
movement. But Trump may be no more than a Jim-Crow reactionary on the take;
Trump is an accomplished lynch-mob leader but does not possess a coherent
ideology. He is what Gramsci might call a "regressive Caesarist" or
"Bonapartist" who exploits the crisis solely for personal benefit. Here, I am
referring to the papers that Anthony, Steven, and others have shared on this
list related to 18 Brumaire.

Most people who have posted on this topic seem to agree that Trump's regime is
"Bonapartist" rather than fascist. Trump appears to rise above classes by
repressing them and not by systematically smashing working-class organizations.
I don't believe Trump can bring fascism "from above." It starts from below, and
today lacks (1) a mobilized mass base (one of Trotsky's conditions), and (2) an
ideology that unites the nation's dominant social forces to win the active
consent of the governed (one of Gramsci's).

The principle that united the US capitalist class for half a century was
neoliberalism. It has today failed the ruling class owing to an underlying
contradiction: Neoliberalism assumes a dominant US that no longer exists
because neoliberals have outsourced US industry in pursuit of maximum profit.
The US today lacks the supply chains that can compete with China in industrial
goods, such as military ships. Rather than sign a peace treaty, the US of
course needs to militarily compete.

I consider an alliance with the party of the ruling class to be "more like" a
popular front.

You don't offer any evidence for your conclusion that
Hence the bulk of the capitalist class of the USA – is overwhelmingly behind
the Trump administration.

The Democratic Party is not far behind the Republican Party in fundraising,
https://ballotpedia.org/Party_committee_fundraising,_2025-2026. Dems have more
small-money donors this cycle, but their bankers have not left them and many
are betting on the Dems taking Congress in 2027.

The strength of the opposition is my argument against the idea that the US
ruling class wants Trump and is not split. The MLRG Online paper offers its
evidence:
That the Trump administration was favoured by the majority of the capitalist
ruling class is clearly confirmed by the manner in which the Democratic Party
maneuvered in order to effectively ‘throw’ the election.

The evidence that the capitalist have opted for a fascist Trump is "clearly
confirmed" by the fact that the Democratic Party conspired to throw the
election??? To me, this statement substitutes a conspiracy theory for evidence.

thanks, Mark
