It still works if I run a compositing manager (e.g. xcompmgr) first;
however the fonts as well as the background are transparent; it would be
nice to make only the background transparent, as we can do for fake
transparency.

Also if you look at a program like skipy-xd, for instance, no
requirement about running xcompmgr is required. It sould be nice to do
the same here.

I remember getting this to work back in the day, and put a few hints in
the mrxvt man page (under the -tr options). I use fvwm2 myself; however
I have the same background on all my virtual desktops...
