One Health Student Initiative

The One Health Student Initiative is recruiting again for this semester!

"One Health is the integrative effort of multiple disciplines working
locally, nationally, and globally to attain optimal health for people,
animals, and the environment."

We will be spending this semester preparing students to work in teams to
develop innovative self-initiated projects to address various One Health
issues particular to student interests, ranging from sustainable food
systems, local impacts of climate change and response to disease outbreaks.
If interested, students will have the opportunity to enter their group's
work in grant competitions including Big Ideas and develop their leadership
abilities and teamwork skills. Definitely show up this semester if you want
to make some meaningful connections, learn about integrative approaches to
health, and want to make a difference in the fields of human health,
biology and environmental science!

Come to our meetings on Tuesday 7-8 pm, location Dwinelle 210!

Students will investigate and document the key biochemical and textural
aspects of carp, tilapia, salmon, shrimp, and catfish (which represent a
variety of seafood textures). Students will use this information to
propose an R&D plan for replicating fish flavor and texture using the most
sophisticated sensor technologies and analyzers (both in and out of the
food industry) which will help major plant-based foods companies find
potential proteins, aromatic compounds, and textures from plants to meet
the demand for plant-based fish.

Summer Session A Course: CMPBIO 175
CMPBIO 175 - Introduction to Computational Biology & Precision Medicine
M, Tu, W, Th 9 am-12 pm, May 22 - June 30
CCN 15130 (3 units)

Instructor: Professor Lisa Barcellos, School of Public Health & Director
for Center for Computational Biology

Bioinformatics has become a very important part of many areas, especially
in the field of biology and medicine. As precision medicine is an emerging
approach for human disease treatment and prevention that takes into account
individual variability in genes, environment, and lifestyle for each
person, training students in the analysis of genomic data and approaches to
understanding and advancing precision medicine is more important now than
ever. This survey course introduces students to computational tools for
the analysis of genomic data and approaches to understanding and advancing
precision medicine. The course is divided into three two-week modules and
offers a hands-on and unique interdisciplinary experience, bringing
together instructors from many related areas to provide a comprehensive
view of this emerging field.

Undergraduate Research in Molecular Plant Bio
We are looking for a motivated undergraduate to perform research related to
enhancing powdery mildew resistance in plants. We identified genes in
Arabidopsis
thaliana that facilitate the growth and reproduction of the powdery mildew
fungus on Arabidopsis. We are now testing whether these same genes in
tomato support powdery mildew growth and reproduction.

The undergraduate would work 12-15 hrs/ per week with a postdoctoral fellow.
Research would include plant maintenance, powdery mildew pathogen assays on
Arabidopsis and tomato, plant phenotyping for altered morphology,
flowering, seed/fruit development, and standard molecular biology assays. We
will favor students who have already completed Bio1A and B and who will be
available to work over the summer and ideally the following year.

Please send your CV, transcript, and statement of interest to Dr. Jyoti Taneja
at jyotitan...@berkeley.edu. T <jyotitan...@berkeley.edu>his could be done
as independent research (for credit) if we act quickly or as a volunteer or
a work-study position.

Research Position at UCSF/SFGH

The Chan Laboratory in the Department of Ophthalmology at UC San Francisco
is currently recruiting an undergraduate student to assist in basic science
and translational research projects. The laboratory is located at the
Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital.

Our laboratory is broadly interested in studying corneal and ocular
diseases. In particular, our lab has an interest in corneal wound healing
and its regulation by matrix enzymes such as matrix metalloproteinases
(MMPs). Human clinical samples are analyzed in our studies. Our lab website
is: http://vision.ucsf.edu/chan/

We are looking for a hard-working and self-motivated student who can think
critically. Laboratory experience is helpful but not necessary. However,
the candidate must have at minimum taken introductory courses in genetics
and molecular and cellular biology. Depending on the skill set of the
student, laboratory techniques may include mouse genotyping; cell culture
work; whole-mount immunostaining; isolating RNA, DNA, and protein from
tissue; and quantitative PCR.

The position will start immediately and has the potential to become a
full-time paid position starting summer 2017. This is an ideal position to
gain valuable research experience for B.S. graduates or graduating seniors
who are planning to take 1-2 years off before entering
graduate/medical/health-related professional schools. Previous lab members
have gone into the following graduate programs after working in the lab:
MD/PhD program (UPenn), MD program (UCSF), nursing school (UCSF), podiatry
school (Samuel Merritt University), and pharmacy school (USCF). Preference
will be given to students who can commit to at a minimum one year and who
willing to commute to the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital Campus
at least a couple of times per week.

Applicants should email the following items to matilda.c...@ucsf.edu
(incomplete
files will not be reviewed):
1) Cover letter articulating your previous lab experience, current
interests, and post-graduate career plans
2) Recent CV
3) Unofficial undergraduate transcript
