Slum Health DeCal

A growing percentage of the population is being born in slum communities-in
2003, around 1 billion people lived in slums, and in two decades that value
is projected to double! What is a slum? How do these communities develop,
and what role do governments, a globalizing economy, and population
dynamics have in this development? Why are these regions so often
epicenters of epidemics such as the Zika virus or malaria? Join our DeCal
to explore the answers to these questions! We have a great line of speakers
who have conducted research in this area, including Dr. Lee Riley and Dr.
Ndola Prata!

Our class will begin on January 26th, 6-8 PM in 45 Evans. Please complete

Volunteer at Brest Cancer Research Lab

The John Park Laboratory at the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer
Center (University of California San Francisco, Mt. Zion Campus) is
recruiting a volunteer to assist in laboratory experiments. The volunteer
will be involved in a research project focused on the enumeration and
characterization of tumor cells in the blood or bone marrow of breast
cancer patients (i.e., circulating tumor cells/disseminated tumor cells)
(e.g., Magbanua et al 2012, BMC Cancer, Magbanua et al 2013, Cancer
Research). The candidate will learn cellular and molecular biology lab
techniques, design of microarray experiments, and flow cytometry to analyze
clinical samples.

Laboratory experience is helpful but not necessary. However, the candidate
must have at minimum taken introductory courses in genetics and molecular
and cellular biology. Students with an interest in computing,
bioinformatics, and data management are highly encouraged to apply.

This is an ideal position to gain valuable research experience for B.S.
graduates or graduating seniors who are planning to take a year off before
entering graduate/medical/health-related professional schools. This
position offers excellent opportunities for intellectual growth and
training in cutting-edge genomics and cancer research.

Incumbent should be able to volunteer for a minimum of 20 hours/week. Note
that the work involves exposure to chemical agents, blood, body fluids, and
tissue.

Please send an electronic copy of a cover letter and one page resume (as
one pdf file) to mark.magba...@ucsf.edu. Please name the pdf file with your
last name in ALL CAPS followed by _Park (e.g., MAGBANUA_Park.pdf) The cover
letter addressed to Dr. John Park should outline your current interests and
immediate career plans. Please put "Volunteer position in the J Park
Lab" in the subject line of the email. Applications without a cover letter
will not be reviewed. We strongly advise that your application be reviewed
by a career counselor.

Undergraduate Research at UCSF Mission Bay

Undergraduate Research at UCSF Mission Bay
Research internships are available in the Collisson Lab at the UCSF Helen
Diller Cancer Research Center. Those interested in medical or graduate
school are particularly encouraged to apply. Openings will be assigned
based on candidate experience. Suggested experience includes: cell bio,
genetics, cell culture experience, PCR, western blots, and other lab work.

UCSF Staff Research Associate II

The lab of Dr. Michael Wilson is looking for a highly motivated,
enthusiastic and organized junior researcher to assist in our aims in
multiple sclerosis research. We are involved in a very exciting study that
seeks to understand the beginnings of multiple sclerosis by studying the
immune system cells in the peripheral blood and cerebrospinal fluid of
newly diagnosed MS patients. We use an in-house flow cytometer/cell sorter
and next generation sequencer to better understand which cell types may be
important to disease activity.

The qualified candidate will have a BA/BS in the biological sciences and
hands-on laboratory experience. The researcher will assist the lab with
processing of human peripheral blood and cerebrospinal fluid samples for
flow cytometry and cell sorting. The sorted subsets will be used for next
generation sequencing and transcriptomics, so some molecular biology work
may be expected as well.

As such, a thorough understanding of flow cytometry and human immunology
are required; experience with cell sorting is a plus but we can train the
right candidate. A high level of attention to detail, organizational skills
and a strong work ethic are essential for success in this position. Patient
visit schedules are constantly changing so some scheduling flexibility and
a positive attitude are important. In return, you will receive the
opportunity to work with cutting edge technology and a fascinating patient
population. We are a passionate, energetic group and hope to find someone
who shares our commitment to the exciting work we are doing.

Required qualifications:

· BA/BS in Cell Biology or related field
· Experience with flow cytometry (immunostaining, understanding of
cell surface markers, setting up machine, compensation, gating, FlowJo
analysis, etc.)
· Experience with molecular biology techniques such as RNA extraction,
reverse transcription, PCR, gel extraction, etc.
· Strong understanding of human immunology
· Attention to detail and organizational skills
· Ability to work independently and self-motivate
· Willing to commit to two years
