I'm not sure what you're meaning here, but no Trinitrons use shadow masks.
Were you referring to competing designs? As you should know, Trinitrons use
highly tensioned vertical wires for shadowing and have that damned annoying
horizontal dark line as a result of the stabilising wire. Trinitron
monitors with their finer line pitch are even worse in this respect.

What aspect of the FD Trinitron design is patented by Sony? Panasonic have
a flat screen tube as well, so I guess the Sony patent must cover some
obscure aspect of the design.

Personally, I have found that the latest large Hitachi tubes are better than
the Wega anyway, being able to be perfectly converged from edge to edge.
Sony just don't seem to be able to get that right for some reason. I bought
a TV that used a Hitachi tube after comparing it side by side with a Wega.
Besides the better convergence the picture was far more stable and less
bloomy and had a better contrast ratio with its very black phosphor, and the
TV itself had more features.

If any manufacturer tries to imitate a Wega, I pity them. If they fix the
convergence and come up with decent cabinet styling, then Sony will be the
ones doing all the sucking.
