I think it was very easy to misunderstand ;-) When you said "Sony 
products other than the R55 have been known to be nothing but trouble" 
the context _seems_ like you are clearly talking about MD portables. 
That's why several of us responded. I now understand what you meant.

I would agree that Sony's non-portable equipement has taken a nose dive 
in quality over the past decade. Their VCRs and TVs used to be the cream 
of the crop, but not anymore.

Their screens used to be head and shoulders above the rest because of the 
Trinitron screens. Now they license Trinitron screens to other 
manufacturers, and many of the competing screen technologies are catching 
up, so their advantages (and the reasons people would pay more for them) 
are gradually disappearing, so they have had to cut prices. Perhaps they 
haven't been able to sustain the quality as the prices drop?
