I know the design of the trinitron tube. Yes, I was referring to competing
designs. I recall seeing a Mitsubishi DiamondTron that was still using dots
instead of lines.
What the FD Trinitron patent covers is the whole story ... the flat tube is
a flat tube, but the inner workings of that tube is where it's at.
As for your appreciation of the Hitachi TV, I've got nothing against them
personally. They are an excellent alternative. However, I still find the
Sony TV's to have always been better than their competitors and considering
the amount of Sony equipment in the professional domain, that just speaks
for itself. Somewhere along the production line, if not all the way through,
Sony equipment has been used to aid the making of a film or a CD, so it
stands to reason that it's reproduced on Sony gear too. That hasn't been my
basis for the equipment that I own, but it does make sense as to why I've
always perceived their audio-visual products to be better (except for
amplifiers and speakers, where I feel that they have decent amps, but their
speakers really do suck to my ears).
When it comes to convergence, no TV is perfect no matter what. The Earth's
magnetic field wreaks havoc on every TV out there and while new TV's like
the Wega and whatnot are capable of automatically compensating for it, you
will never EVER get it spot on. Some TV's you will pick it from a mile away,
others you will need to look up close the tube. Either way, you'll still get
it. As for decent cabinet styling, seems that every manufacturer is now
leaning towards that look. The masses must like it. I know I do.
Adios,

I'm not sure what you're meaning here, but no Trinitrons use shadow masks.
Were you referring to competing designs? As you should know, Trinitrons use
highly tensioned vertical wires for shadowing and have that damned annoying
horizontal dark line as a result of the stabilising wire. Trinitron
monitors with their finer line pitch are even worse in this respect.
What aspect of the FD Trinitron design is patented by Sony? Panasonic have
a flat screen tube as well, so I guess the Sony patent must cover some
obscure aspect of the design.
Personally, I have found that the latest large Hitachi tubes are better than
the Wega anyway, being able to be perfectly converged from edge to edge.
Sony just don't seem to be able to get that right for some reason. I bought
a TV that used a Hitachi tube after comparing it side by side with a Wega.
Besides the better convergence the picture was far more stable and less
bloomy and had a better contrast ratio with its very black phosphor, and the
TV itself had more features.

If any manufacturer tries to imitate a Wega, I pity them. If they fix the
convergence and come up with decent cabinet styling, then Sony will be the
ones doing all the sucking.
