Interestingly enough, we are now putting in a custom from MT (we are C/S v5.5.2) that will cause a warning message to appear whenever a doc is selected when there is another doc with a similar name. The custom is attached in the provider dictionary. It instructs the user that multiple physicians have the same of similar last names and to verify correct physician selection. That's all it does - it just warns.
Don't know if we had to pay for this or not. Since HIPAA is involved, it should be a non-chargeable event by Meditech. Only one of these providers was in our Provider Dictionary. They also happened to each have a patient by the exact same name (two different patients). So Dr.Smith-1 had a patient by the name of Mary Jones, and Dr.Smith-2 also had a patient by the name of Mary Jones....a different Mary Jones. Needless to say, this caused confusion and lab results for Dr.Smith-1's Mary went to Dr.Smith-2. He did not catch that the results were for the wrong patient and treated his Mary for the other Mary's health problems. WOW.... So, I am wondering how you at the larger facilities (we are relatively small)...deal with doctors who have the same name and similar mnemonics. Our registration clerks did not catch that the Dr.Smith on the prescription which the patient presented to them, was different than the one Dr.Smith we had in our Provider Dictionary in Meditech. Our LAB and Admissions Directors are wondering if a "pop-up" screen could display during the Meditech registration process which would list the doc's full name & office address, etc. Any suggestions as to how to flag the "same name" physicians would be greatly appreciated.
