Different strokes for different folks. Some people auto-filter email to different folders and browse & read maybe 5%, and then just mark all as read, or delete unread mail. I leave everything in the inbox, and tend to focus on unread mail with a very quick filter - delete/archive/reply & archive/leave till later, with a heavy bias for deleting. Stormy Peters has some tips: http://stormyscorner.com/2010/05/10-skills-to-master-to-get-things-done-online.html And also some "view the world from other people's perspective" tips on how our habits can throw others off: http://blogs.gnome.org/bolsh/2009/02/01/free-software-consulting-marketing-business-model/ For those who want to become major power users, Mutt has some excellent features that allow you to handle mail without ever taking your hands off the keyboard: http://www.mutt.org/ For those who use other email, filters & labels can help: Thunderbird: http://is.gd/dcPKs Gmail: http://is.gd/dcPNK My number one tip is: Learn keyboard shortcuts for your email client. Mouse work is the biggest time killer when dealing with larger amounts of email. Number two tip: don't have auto-check on. Batch process mail every couple of hours. But I know others don't do that.
