David,

Let me start by saying I'm no expert when it comes to L20's but I did
have one in my first 1600 with SU's and mild street cam. I reckon you
should be able to get atleast 150 reliable hp with resorting to radical
heads, carbs and cams that will make it a pig to drive on the street.

The beauty of the L20 is its low down torque. This is what you want to
exploit. Rather than trying to get it to rev like a L18-16,
you are better of to take less hp at high revs for more midrange power
and torque. After all, this is where you will be doing most of your
driving (unless it's a race motor).

I'd go for a mild cam and single 45 sidedraft weber. Shave the head and
block for a tad more compression and match port the manifolds. Dont
worry about extractors. (I did, they made stuff all difference). put a 5
speed behind it with the stock diff. And you'll have a pretty quick,
RELIABLE car that isn't too THIRSTY!! and can cruise down the highway at
about 2000 -3000 rpm in 5th alll day on a tank of fuel.

Hope this helps. Sorry if I seem too practical. haha

Andrew
